Hi Tom, :)
The button is the mid-nineteenth, it is not uncommon, these buttons were in vogue on the uniforms of pupils at the time.

Hello Tom,

you're welcome on this forum.
It's incredible because I'm come from Belfort wich is a little town on the east of France.
"Lycee de Belfort" was the only high school of town for a long time... this kind of buttons are uniform buttons. I have no more informations for the moment but I thinks those buttons where used in IX th century..I'll try to search a little more :)

History
Secondary education is to leave Belfast with a given opening October 14, 1803. This school was extended by the addition of a boarding school, is transformed into a college in 1808. When war broke out in 1870, the College of Burgesses in Place hosts approximately 150 students and professors are 9 chairs. It is renowned for the strength of his teaching. Belfort was then part of Upper Rhine, and students wishing to pursue advanced studies in literature and science colleges go to Colmar and Strasbourg.

2. The creation of the National High School

The heroic resistance of Belfort in the Prussian invaders, led by Colonel Denfert-Rochereau it is not to be annexed to Germany as the rest of Alsace. Detached from the Upper Rhine following the Treaty of May 10, 1871 FRANKFURT, the new Department of Belfort must establish an administrative structure but also educational.

From June 26 the mayor, Edward MENY and its municipal council, send a letter to the Minister of Public Instruction requesting the creation of a High School. But it was not more than eighteen months of inquiries, and financial bids, before obtaining government approval.

This is done in August 1872. To ensure its share of funding, the city floated a loan-by subscription and is rare if not unique - also receives support from donors Upper Rhine.

Started in April 1873, construction is sufficiently advanced for a first return occurs on November 4 of that year.

The National School BELFORT was born.

He knows, from its opening, an influx of students who exceeded all expectations: from 287 in 1873, staff spent the following year to 475. To make "their education and instruction in French, many Alsatian come to register.

It quickly became necessary to develop an expansion project. Thus in the central building in the shape of H is added, in 1877-1878, construction of a similar but smaller "Little School".
